Background of the Study

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and kidney failure. While antihypertensive medications are essential, lifestyle modifications—such as dietary changes, regular physical activity, stress management, and reduced alcohol and tobacco consumption—are equally critical in hypertension management (American Heart Association [AHA], 2024). Nurses play a key role in counseling hypertensive patients on these lifestyle changes.

Despite the importance of lifestyle counseling, studies have shown that nurses' compliance with providing such counseling is inconsistent due to time constraints, lack of training, and high patient workloads (Adebayo & Eze, 2023). In Ekiti State, the extent to which nurses adhere to recommended guidelines for lifestyle counseling remains underexplored. This study aims to assess nurses’ compliance with lifestyle counseling and its impact on hypertension management.

Statement of the Problem

Non-compliance with lifestyle counseling among nurses has been linked to poor blood pressure control and an increased burden of hypertension-related complications (Ogunleye et al., 2024). In Ekiti State, many hypertensive patients struggle with lifestyle modifications due to inadequate guidance from healthcare professionals (Bassey & Johnson, 2023). This study seeks to evaluate the level of compliance among nurses in providing lifestyle counseling and to identify factors influencing their adherence to these recommendations.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of nurses’ compliance with lifestyle counseling for hypertensive patients.
  2. To evaluate the impact of lifestyle counseling on blood pressure control in hypertensive patients.
  3. To identify barriers to nurses' compliance with lifestyle counseling in hypertension management.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent do nurses comply with lifestyle counseling guidelines for hypertensive patients?
  2. How does nurses’ compliance with lifestyle counseling affect blood pressure control in hypertensive patients?
  3. What challenges affect nurses’ compliance with lifestyle counseling in Ekiti State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses who comply with lifestyle counseling guidelines have better patient outcomes in hypertension management.
  2. Higher compliance with lifestyle counseling is associated with improved blood pressure control among hypertensive patients.
  3. Barriers such as time constraints and lack of training negatively affect nurses’ compliance with lifestyle counseling.
